Commissioned writing

Love letters, apologies, vows, speeches, and the letters that are hard to begin.

You knowwhat you mean.

We'll help you say it.

A commission takes about half an hour of your time and arrives back as a finished piece, in a voice you choose. Six services, three revision rounds, and work you can read before you buy any.

From the readings

The kitchen radio

Love Letter. Written by Kindred to show the standard, not for a client. Nobody's commissioned piece appears on this site.

You still turn the radio down when you're reversing. Eleven years, and I've never asked you why. I've decided it's because you need all of your attention in one place, and I like knowing that about you more than I like knowing most things about most people.

This is what I mean when I say I love you, and it's why the phrase has never felt like enough. It doesn't cover the Tuesday evenings. It doesn't cover you standing at the counter reading the back of a box while the pasta goes soft, or the fact that you've kept every ticket stub in a jar we have both agreed we will never sort through.

Why people commission

One service.
Several good reasons.

You can hand us a draft you've already written and tell us what's wrong with it. That counts as material too.

  • 01The occasion is worth more attention than the week will allow.
  • 02You could write it. You'd rather it were exceptional.
  • 03You've drafted it four times and none of them sound like you.
  • 04Getting the tone wrong here would cost something real.
  • 05Commissioning it for someone is itself part of the gift.

How it works

I

A guided intake.

Questions built for your specific piece: the people, the history, the details, what the moment has to do. Roughly half an hour, typed or dictated, and skippable wherever it doesn't apply.

II

We write it.

Your material, your register, the length the message needs. Nothing invented, and anything you gave us purely as background stays out of the writing.

III

You make it yours.

The draft arrives by email as text you can use anywhere. Three revision rounds come with it, so nothing has to stay in that you don't want.

More about the process
Folded sheets of cream paper and an open envelope on a dark surface, joined by a thin red thread
Delivered as text by email. What happens to it after that is up to you: printed, handwritten out, read from a card, or sent as it is.

Begin

Half an hour now.
Something they keep.

The intake takes as long as you want to give it, and you can stop and come back. Length, turnaround and price are chosen at the very end, and nothing is charged before that.
